Manila cop charged for not arresting drunk who punched a priest

The parish priest of the Most Holy Trinity Parish in Sampaloc, Manila has accused Manila police of doing nothing when he was punched by a drunk on election day.

Catholic priest Joebert Fernandez said he was with lay volunteers and members of the Parish Pastoral Council for Responsible Voting near Lopez Jaena Elementary school when their vehicle was blocked by a certain Joel Banez, who was drunk.

Banez was allegedly shouting at Fernandez and others in the vehicle, prompting one of them to run to Manila Police Station 4 to ask for help.

While this was happening, the priest got down from the vehicle and was punched by Banez. Fernandez subdued Banez with the help of a sacristan and brought him to the police station.

They found out later that Police Officer 3 Arnel Joson of Station 4 did not even put Banez under arrest. Joson also allegedly told Fernandez that he doubted he was a real priest.

Joson faces a Serious Neglect of Duty complaint at the National Police Commission, the People’s Journal reported.
