Will a ‘Comedy Academy’ clean up Philippine comedy?

Will a “Comedy Academy” help clean up Philippine comedy? The Movie and Television Review and Classification Board seems to think so.

According to a Rappler report, the creation of an “academy” where writers, producers, and artists can have discussions on comedy. The proposed academy is not meant to teach comedians and comedy writers what is funny and isn’t, however.

The academy “will allow a balanced and deliberate manner of handling an artist’s creativity and, at the same time, responsibility,” Rappler said.

The suggestion came from a discussion the MTRCB had with ABS-CBN producers and Vice Ganda.

Vice Ganda was the subject of criticism last month over a joke she made at a televised concert poking fun at GMA executive Jessica Soho’s weight, and for incorporating a gag about gang rape at Soho’s expense.

The MTRCB will also be meeting with representatives of GMA and TV5 later this month.
