The Quezon City government has become a defender of persons suffering from human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) after it approved an ordinance that will penalize against companies or employers who discriminate against employees with HIV.
According to the Philippine Star, Mayor Herbert Bautista recently signed the law that will revoke the licenses or permits of employers found to have discriminated against persons with HIV or even just applicants applicants with “regard to hiring, termination, promotion, compensation, job training, or any other term, condition or privilege of employment.”
Moreover, the ordinance disallows employers from requiring employees or applicants to undergo HIV testing. It also sets new laws and protocols on handling suspected or positive HIV/AIDS cases in the workplace.
