City engineers find new flood-prone areas in Quezon City

The Quezon City Engineering Department are puzzled over areas in the city that are now prone to flooding.

According to a Manila Bulletin report, Anonas Street in Barangay Quirino 3-A is now prone to flooding.  Also affected by flooding from Lagarian Creek in that barangay are Aguho, Langka, Almaciga, Pajo, and Siniguelas Streets.

QCED chief Joselito Cabungcal said “despite our regular cleaning of the drainage mains in the city where tons of garbage were collected, these areas which used be flood-free are now flood-prone.”

Among the possible causes for the new flood-prone areas are heavier rains from climate change and the construction of structures along drainage creeks, he said. “It is disheartening to find out that some local officials are the ones breaking the law. Squatters are being relocated to safer grounds but it is very disgusting that the once who should uphold the law are the ones breaking them”, Cabungcal said in the report.

The QCED will be on round-the-clock alert in case of heavy rains, which the engineering chief said “have totally been unpredictable.” The QCED might also borrow boats to personally check the city’s creeks for obstructions that contribute to flooding.
