IP Office takes down torrent site over piracy of Filipino songs

The Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines (IPOPHL) has issued a three-day temporary restraining order against a local BitTorrent site over illegal file sharing of TV shows, movies, and music.

According to an Interaksyon report, IPOPHL direcor general Ricardo Blancaflor said kat.ph or KickAss Torrents hosted by dotPH Domains Inc., has been taken down. He said it has been “notorious” for facilitating online piracy.

The TRO was prompted by a copyright infringement complaint filed by the Philippine Association of the Record Industry Inc over the unauthorized distribution of Original Pilipino Music.

The TRO can extend to 20 days, and if dotPH Domains files a counter-affidavit, IPOPHL “will issue a corresponding preliminary injunction to continuously block the website until the termination of the case,” the report said.

The hosting service has been named respondent because IPOPHL has yet to determine who owns and runs kat.ph.
