Pagasa to get supercomputer for more accurate forecasts

IBM will donate a supercomputer to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration to help it forecast the weather and project how climate change will affect the country.

The computer, expected to arrive in September, will help the weather bureau come out with more accurate seven-day weather forecasts. The longer forecasts wil give residents more time to prepare for storms than the three-day forecasts Pagasa currently issues.

It is also expected to help Pagasa give farmers advice on when to plant and when to harvest crops in the face of a changing climate, reports said.
