Showbiz in a snap: Miss World to push through, and other news

Our rapid-fire roundup of things happening in Philippine showbiz:

1. MISS WORLD TO PUSH THROUGH IN INDONESIA: CORY QUIRINO
So what if a member of Indonesia’s National Human Rights Commission opposes the beauty pageant, which he describes as an event that puts “women’s bodies on display”? So what if religious affairs minister Suryadharma Ali wants the beau-con to be cancelled? “As far as we’re concerned, it’s all systems go,” says Cory Quirino, Miss World Philippines pageant director, who hasn’t received any word from the organizers that it’s not pushing through. That means it’s still very possible for our delegate, Megan Young, to “bring the bacon in the house,” as someone told her. Bacon, that’s another thing not welcome in Indonesia.

2. OGIE ALCASID GETS BUSY AT HIS NEW HOME NETWORK

Ogie’s first project with TV5 is a teleserye called The Gift, where he plays the guardian of a boy who sees dead people (his mother happens to be the ex of Ogie’s character). The soap will require some serious acting from the funnyguy, but that’s no problem because while we’re used to seeing him in Bubble Gang, he’s actually done some serious stuff back in GMA (like Magpakailanman, remember?). Anyway, Ogie da Pogi has several projects lined up for him at TV5, such as The Mega and The Songwriter with Sharon Cuneta, and the gag show Tropa Mo ‘Ko with Gelli de Belen, so it looks like we’ll be seeing a lot of him on TV5.

3. DAWN ZULUETA ADMITS CRUSH ON COCO MARTIN AND GERALD ANDERSON

Dawn shared on The Buzz last Sunday, Sept 1, that Vice Ganda recently asked her to share the names of the young male stars she’s crushing on (yes, Coco and Gerald in case you missed the title up there). “Boy crush lang naman iyon,” she said with a laugh. She said she likes Gerald especially because he’s a sweetheart and a total package who loves his mom. The interesting thing is that she played mom to Coco’s character in Walang Hanggan while she will be Gerald’s mom in the new show Bukas Na Lang Kita Mamahalin

4. MANILYN REYNES, SHERYL CRUZ, AND TINA PANER SING ON ASAP

The three, aka The Triplets a looong time ago, reunited on ASAP last Sunday, Sept. 1, and delighted fans (and 80s babies) with a song number: “Breakout” by Swing Out Sisters. After the number, when asked about what they miss in the 80s, Sheryl shared that it’s making music with the girls —  apart from fashion and bad hair. Good to hear that they still sound all right! And oh, they just had to wear matching outfits. Who’s your fave among the three?

5. THE VOICE OF THE PHILIPPINES LOSES MORE CONTESTANTS
It was live performance and elimination time last night on ABS-CBN’s hit talent search and here are those who performed and got eliminated.

  • Team Bamboo: Angelique Alcantara got booted out while Paolo Onesa and Isa Fabregas are still in the game!
  • Team Sarah: Yuki Ito left while Maki Ricafort and Klarisse de Guzman made it to the next round.
  • Team Apl: Tristhan Perfecto had to go home but Janice Javier and Penelope Matanguihan are still in the running!
  • Team Lea: Diday Garcellano was sent home but Mitoy Yonting and Kim Mainit are moving on to the next stage.
