Pinoy moms’ group roots for medical marijuana

Marijuana is not just for getting high—it’s for sick people, too.

This is what the group, Philippine Moms for Medical Marijuana, wants everyone to understand. They’re hoping that the government would legalize medical marijuana.

“According to Kathleen Kim, founder of the Philippine Moms for Medical Marijuana, marijuana, also known as cannabis, has medicinal value that could be beneficial to patients,” reports Sheila Crisostomo in The Philippine Star.

Kim stated her case during the recent Philippine Medical Association forum at the Manila Hotel.

However, Department of Health Assistant Secretary Dr. Eric Tayag explained that medical marijuana is still illegal in the Philippines. He said that those who are using will face criminal charges under Republic Act 9165 or the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002.

Tayag advised Kim’s group that since RA 9165 has provisions for “medical or scientific research,” they could “lobby with the Dangerous Drugs Board for their advocacy to be considered.”
