Does Andres Bonifacio deserve a state funeral?

It often seems like we haven’t given Andres Bonifacio, who is hailed as the Father of Philippine Revolution, the attention he deserves.

“Councilor Don Juan Bagatsing, tourism committee chairman, wants Manila to give Bonifacio the long and overdue and well-deserved posthumous state funeral in time for his 150th birth anniversary at the end of this month,” reports Manila Standard Today.

According to the report, Bagatsing knows that “while only Presidents, Vice Presidents, House Speakers, Senate Presidents, National Artists, and Medal of Valor winners are given state funerals,” the President is empowered the grant the privilege in very special cases. Bagatsing cited the case of the late Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) Secretary Jesse Robredo.

Bonifacio was born in Tondo on November 30, 1863.
