The first and only time the Philippines participated in the Venice Biennale was in 1964.
The good news: We’re re-signing.
According to a press release from the Department of Foreign Affairs, a panel of five jurors, comprised of acclaimed local and foreign art professionals, will decide which lucky artist will be part of the Philippine pavilion.
Entitled “Hetero(topic),” it will be curated by international contemporary art historian Pearlie Rose S. Baluyut.
This “revolves around the concept of the Philippines as a tropical heterotopia, a real space of crises where utopia…is simultaneously represented, negotiated and/or subverted.”
The Venice Biennale is the most prestigious art festival in the world, held every two years.
