He’s going after the newspaper that features his older brother, Mon, as a columnist. It’s beyond awkward.
“On Monday, Mar 24, broadcaster Erwin Tulfo filed a PHP12 million libel suit against the Philippine Daily Inquirer for publishing a story linking him to alleged media payoffs in 2009,” reports ABS-CBN News correspondent Doland Castro on ABS-CBNnews.com.
Tulfo named as respondents Philippine Daily Inquirer editor-in-chief Letty Jimenez-Magsanoc, managing editor Jose Ma. Nolasco, news editor Artemio Engracia, and news reporter Nancy Carvajal.
Tulfo’s libel complaint arose from an Inquirer article published on Mar 19, with the headline, “Payoffs to media bared.”
The said report had contained quotes from former National Agribusiness Corporation (NABCOR) officials Rhodora Mendoza and Vic Cacal, who alleged that TV5 news anchor Erwin Tulfo, along with another broadcaster, received payoffs in the form of “advertising expenses” from the government agency.
In the Inquirer report, Mendoza and Cacal claimed that Tulfo received a check for PHP245,535 on Mar 10, 2009. The amount, they explained, had bee “drawn from a NABCOR account at United Coconut Planters’ Bank (UCPB), Tektite Branch PSE Center, Ortigas, Pasig City.”
Tulfo has denied this allegation and said he is “willing to face any Senate inquiry or justice department investigation.”
