Carinderia Crawl E9: Baguio beans and sinigang na tanigue at Red Gate Eatery in Caloocan

To save time when she’s busy tending to her sari-sari store, 58-year-old Evelyn Retoriano gets her meals from a carinderia. As a mother of four, she is very picky when it comes to restaurants and eateries: cleanliness and sanitation are a must.

Luckily, Red Gate Eatery passes her standards. Located in a repurposed garage along 3rd Street in busy Caloocan, it’s a small carinderia with very accommodating attendants. The food is very cheap — trust us, we’ve seen what they charge at other eateries.

On this installment of Carinderia Crawl, Evelyn orders tanigueng bato (mackerel) and sautéed beans. She says that vegetable and fish is her favorite combination because it is very nutritious. She also avoids eating fried food. Watch the video below.

WHAT EVELYN ATE: Sinigang na tanigueng bato (mackerel) cooked in tamarind broth, sautéed beans and one cup of rice for P75.

WHAT EVELYN THINKS: She loved the sinigang because the cut of the fish was big and liked the sautéed beans the vegetable was still crisp and not swimmming in sauce.

WORDS OF WISDOM: “May mga ibang hindi nagbabayad ng utang, lilipat ng bahay o kaya hindi na magpapakita. Pinagdadasal ko na lang sila at iniisip ko na tulong ko na lang iyon.”

Red Gate Eatery, 130 3rd St corner 11th Avenue, Caloocan City. +63 939 8638807. Monday to Saturday, 7am to 10pm.
