Don Emilio Yap, top guy at Manila Bulletin newspaper, Manila Hotel and Philtrust Bank, and stakeholder at Centro Escolar University, passed away at the age of 88.

He was named  the 13th richest Filipino by Forbes magazine in 2012.

“Media tycoon Emilio Yap, chairman of newspaper Manila Bulletin, gets biggest chunk of wealth from more than two-thirds stake in Philtrust Bank, where he sits on board as chairman emeritus. Also has stakes in construction, hospitality, education. Active philanthropist, celebrates his birthday by giving to a difference cause every year,” according to a Forbes report which named him 13th richest Filipino, with an estimated worth of US$1,350 million, in 2012.

The Philippine Star’s website, however, reported that he died on Thursday. It has updated the information.

Yap was born in Fujian, China, the only son of an academic father. “My grandfather used to own a trading shop in Manila. The first time I went to Manila, it was to study. I returned to Fujian when my grandfather’s shop closed down. My second trip to Manila was funded by my mother’s brother, who sold a parcel of his land for my ship’s passage. From Manila, I traveled to Dumaguete, where I tended shop for a trader,” Yap told Asian Dragon magazine in an interview in 2012.
