Why were 4 Customs officials allegedly nearly deported from Japan?

They must have tried really hard to keep this story under wraps, but, well, here it is.

“Japanese officials almost deported some Bureau of Customs (BOC) officials last month for trysting with a member of an alleged syndicate under its watchlist,” reports Raymund F. Antonio in Tempo Online.

Here’s how it happened:

An 11-man BOC contingent went to Japan to attend a Risk Management Seminar hosted by Japan from March 10 to 14.

The report then explained: “Shortly after disembarking from Philippine Airlines Flight PR 430 last March 9, Willie Tolentino, director of the Custom’s Enforcement and Security Service (ESS), and lawyer Gilbert Ordoña, a member of the Customs Police Division, ere welcomed by a certain Jin Kaneda who gave them the ‘royal treatment.'”

Kaneda reportedly provided a limousine for Tolentino and Ordoña. The two Customs officials also invited some of their colleagues to partake in the lavish dinner treats given by Kaneda.

However, things quickly turned scary when the Tolentino and Ordoña were accosted by Japanese authorities during the conference. Along with at least two other Customs officials, the two were questioned. It got to the point where all of their things were confiscated and they were on the verge of being deported.

Luckily for them, the incident was soon sorted out.

For their part, the two other Customs officials who joined Tolentino and Ordoña said they didn’t know who their benefactor was and that they simply joined their colleagues for the “lavish dinner.”

It turned out that Kaneda was “a member of an alleged syndicate under Japan’s watchlist.”

Unfortunately, the report didn’t explain how exactly Tolentino and Ordoña became friends with Kaneda. The report also said the information about the Japan snafu was provided by “a source privy to the incident.”
