National anthem sing-off: Jessica Sanchez VS Ashanti

Just like you, we’re still on a Manny Pacquiao high.

But before we talk more about Ninong (and Mommy Dionesia, of course, who was undoubtedly the real winner that night — she made it to Buzzfeed), we allot some space for those who sang the national anthems, Jessica Sanchez for the Philippines, and Ashanti for the US.

Jessica Sanchez’s “Lupang Hinirang”

WHAT WE LIKE:
Her mataray kilay.
Her confidence. This “performance” was so much better than her previous Philippine national anthem
The way she growled “ang” in “ang mamatay ng dahil sa’yo.”

WHAT WE DIDN’T LIKE:

Her plain intro: “American Idol finalist, 18-year old vocal powerhouse, international recording star.”
Her dafuq-is-she-wearing dress.
The shade of her lipstick.
How she didn’t color her roots.
How her left hand – and not her right hand – was on her chest.

Ashanti’s “Star-Spangled banner”

WHAT WE LIKE:
Her impressive intro: “singer, songwriter, actress, author, Grammy award winner, multi-platinum superstar.”
That dress. Shining, shimmering, splendid. And sexy.
The way the audience cheered her early on.
All the kulots.
The way she sang “And the home of the braaaaaaaaaaaaaave.”

WHAT WE DIDN’T LIKE:
Her very amateur-ish first line. Good thing she made bawi agad.
Her not-so-good low notes.
Her distracting roots.
