Geeking out with Zac Sarian and his Bacolod finds

In the totem pole of cool geeks, we think Zac Sarian should be on top.

The Manila Bulletin journalist has tirelessly covered the agricultural sector for so many years and when he gets excited, we get excited.

On his recent visit to Bacolod, Sarian writes about these four new things that interest him:

1. Dried veggies that could keep for a year on the shelf: “The dehydrated vegetables can be used for cooking vegetable dishes whenever there are no fresh veggies available. All one has to do is soak the dried vegetables in water, and they will regain their fresh condition.”

2. Marang harvested in Negros is different from Davao’s: “The Negros Marang does not have the strong aroma of the Davao variety. Nevertheless, it is very nice to eat. In fact, some people actually prefer one that does not have a strong aroma.”

3. Giant bean from Calauit, Palawan, harvested by a retired UP Los Baños professor: “He gave us a pod that was nine inches long and 1.25 inches wide at the widest. The pod contained 8 red beans that are about 0.75 inch long.”

4. Special variety saluyot from Japan, also from the UP professor: “He swears that this is the best saluyot he has ever tasted. He was able to grow this in Negros and in fact has produced some seeds.”

And that’s it for now, from the world of Zac.
