MRT-LRT interchange in QC ‘most probably’ in Trinoma

How much are you willing to pay to have a train station named after you? Is PHP200 million too much?

Not for SM Prime Holdings, who paid that much to Light Rail Transit Authority for a station to be built by the third quarter of 2015 near Edsa corner West Avenue.

“It would be recalled that the DOTC originally picked SM North Edsa as the site of the proposed common station but later revised the plan and transferred the site near Trinoma,” reports Lawrence Agcaoili in The Philippine Star.

This is where it gets tricky.

Transportation Secretary Joseph Emilio Abaya has since then opposed the idea, claiming the government could save as much as PHP1 billion if the interchange was instead constructed near the Trinoma Mall, where the North Avenue MRT station is now located.

A proposal will be formalized in a few days, and “it’s most probably in Trinoma,” says Undersecretary Rene Limcaoco.

The Transportation Department confirms it will soon issue a bid bulletin naming the Ayala Land-owned mall as the site of the proposed P1.4 billion interchange.

Still, there is hope for SM — it can keep its naming rights.

The interchange will connect LRT1 that runs from Baclaran to Monumento, MRT 3 that runs from Edsa to Taft Avenue, and the proposed MRT7 that will run from Caloocan City and pass through inner Quezon City before stopping at Edsa.
