Lit watch: Ilocano writer Elizabeth Ferido-Bohlin pens political thriller set in Europe

Elizabeth Ferido-Bohlin, an Ilocano writer originally from Vigan and now based in Sweden, has penned a gripping political thriller set in Europe.

“I met Elizabeth… some 24 years ago when we were distant neighbors in Södermalm, a district in central Stockholm. A petite lady with long black hair, she was always smartly dressed in pants and blazers and on sunny days, wore a hat. It was not easy to let someone like her go without a side glance, because she stood out from the crowd,” writes Sheilah Ocampo Kalfors in Philippine Daily Inquirer.

According to the profile piece, Elizabeth, the second youngest in a family of five, came to Sweden in 1972, days before President Ferdinand Marcos declared Martial Law and banned foreign travel. Originally a law student at UP, she enrolled in University of Stockholm’s International Graduate School for English-Speaking Students and soon earned a PhD in international politics.

Her stints at the embassies of Saudi Arabia and South Korea in Sweden inspired her book, entitled Hegemony.

The story: An object encrypted with a Master Plan for terror at the EU parliament brought to Stockholm by a Saudi royal entourage goes missing. Prince Fareed’s missions: sign the Gripen Arms Sales with Sweden negotiated in Riyadh by government officials and address Turkey’s membership to the EU in Brussels.

But amid the 113th Nobel Prize Award Ceremony in Stockholm Concert House, the Saudi ambassador is murdered and a Swedish prostitute is beheaded while secret collaterals to the Gripen Agreement securing Islam’s dominance in Svealand are exposed.

Hegemony by Elizabeth Ferido-Bohlin is available on Kindle for US$5.99.
