The great Makati cake debate rages on

Never has cake caused so much controversy in the country.

“The local government of Makati denied the accusation of Atty. Renato Bondal that the cakes given to senior citizens on special occasions cost PHP1,000 each,” reports ABS-CBNnews.com.

The report said that according to city administrator Eleno Mendoza, the cakes were purchased at only PHP306.75 each. He added that they have “documents to back their claim.”

The report noted: “The city government gives the cakes to its senior citizens on their birthdays and also during silver wedding anniversaries of senior couples.”

The report explained that “Bondal, who lost to Makati Mayor Jejomar Erwin Binay Jr. in a previous election, presented cakes from popular cake shops during the August 20 hearing into the allegedly overpriced Makati office and parking building.”

Bondal had claimed that the so-called “Binay cakes” cost more than P1,000 each, which he said made them “way more expensive than the similarly sized cakes being offered by two popular Filipino bakeshops which are priced at P570 and P390.”
