Red Panda

COCONUTS HOT SPOT — Foodies from all over the metro regard Barrio Kapitolyo in Pasig City as a food haven. The street is lined with small restaurants offering wonderful food creations that range from burgers, ribs, grilled chicken, ramen, coffee, cakes, even bulalo and lechon.

There seems to be something for everybody. And while it is often enjoyable to eat at no-frills and pocket-friendly places, some people are on the lookout for something more. This is where Red Panda comes in.

THE LOOK
By Kapitolyo standards, Red Panda is spacious, comfortable and even upscale. As you approach the place, you’ll notice the restaurant’s logo, which is actually an image of a wine glass, and a panda hiding within the swirls. This loveable panda is a hint on the type of food the place serves: European-Chinese cuisine.

Dedicated parking slots for guests are available and is a refreshing breather since most Kapitolyo restaurants just offer street parking. Once inside, you’ll notice that the place is far from being poco as it can seat about 35-40 people.

Red Panda utilizes modern design elements and furniture that is aligned with its bistro concept. The light neutral colors lends a relaxing vibe and a touch of elegance. Upfront is the dining area, while on the right is the semi-open kitchen.

At the farther end is the delicatessen that displays the cured meat, bread, and cheese selection.

THE GRUB
Wanting something hearty and comforting for lunch, I ordered the baby back ribs (PHP360) while a business client had the crispy chicken mango salad PHP217 (which made me feel guilty about my order.)

The baby back ribs were excellent, with the meat falling-off-the-bone tender and the sauce having the right balance of sweet, spicy and savory. The dish was served with rice and corn kernels on the side, though it would have been better for me though if the sauce had a slightly thicker consistency.

For those looking for a healthier option, the crispy chicken mango salad has bits of chopped grape and mango on top of Romaine lettuce with mango dressing that looks appetizing underneath the deep-fried and breaded chicken strips.

While I’ve read some unfavorable reviews about the Chinese side of its cuisine, I think its best that I try it out for myself sometime.

With its cozy interior, good food and relaxing ambiance, Red Panda is slowly becoming a favorite spot of many food and wine lovers from all over the city. Though it is relatively new, it has definitely given a new dimension to the bustling Kapitolyo food scene.
