Some Yolanda survivors may lose home due to DPWH improvements for Pope’s visit

Does Pope Francis know about this?

Some families in Palo, Leyte who are still in the process of repairing their homes, which got damaged when Typhoon Yolanda hit in 2013, may end up losing their homes altogether.

“What Yolanda failed to do the government may succeed in doing, as the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) has reportedly started to widen the highway leading to the seat of the Palo archdiocese in time for Pope Francis’ visit in January,” reports Lottie Salarda on InterAksyon.com.

The report noted: “The DPWH, which plans to expand the road by 10 meters from the center line, has already begun demolishing some of the homes in Barangays Arado and Buri.”

The report added that “among the structures that face destruction is the Palo public library, which is in a historic 200-year-old house that was also severely damaged by Yolanda.”

Aaron Almadro, editor-in-chief of 8 Magazine, which circulates in Eastern Visayas, said he received his first letter about his family ancestral home being demolished in February from Palo Mayor Remedios Petilla.

Almadro stated: “The funny thing is, they want to extend the road 10 meters from the center line without considering that they put up electric posts around seven meters from the centerline. Then the original drainage is six meters away. They will have to do all the work all over again, spend for nothing.”
