Just how gruesome was Jennifer Laude’s murder?

“Police investigators reported that she had cuts and bruising on her head and neck, including a cut on her tongue, bruising around her eyes and cheekbones, and abrasions on her left forearm and right leg,” according to a QC Pride Council statement read on Friday at the National Day of Outrage held at the University of the Philippines in Diliman, Quezon City.

Laude, a trangender woman from Olongapo, was found dead on Oct 11 at 11:45pm in a motel room after checking in with US Marine Pvt 1st Class Joseph Scott Pemberton, who has been held in Camp Aguinaldo since Oct 22.

Organizers of the National Day of Outrage appealed to President Aquino to “put an end to violence and discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity and expression.”

“One death due to gender-based violence is one death too many. The injustice committed against Jennifer is not crime against one private individual; it’s a serious assault against a community exposed to stigma and hatred, without protection from the government and the law,” according to the event’s statement.
