UP professor seeks NBI’s help in QC road rage case involving VIP’s bodyguards

This road rage drama just got bigger — especially since the alleged VIPs involved have allegedly refused to identify the bodyguard who drew his gun and threatened those who supposedly got in the way of a convoy.

A University of the Philippines (UP) professor — along with her son, daughter-in-law, and two grandchildren — was threatened by an armed man along Congressional Avenue in Quezon City last October 27.

The professor has been identified as Atty. Elizabeth Pangalangan, a professor at the UP College of Law. The man who threatened her and her family is a bodyguard of Priscilla Meneses, the mother of Bulacan town ‎Mayor Patrick Meneses — partner of actress Ara Mina.

A Philippine Daily Inquirer report by Nancy C. Carvajal revealed that Pangalangan is the wife of Inquirer publisher Raul Pangalangan. She is also the director of the Institute of Human Rights at the UP Law Center.

On Mon, the Pangalangans were on board a Toyota Fortuner and on their way to Himlayang Pilipino when a Toyota Innova followed by a heavily-tinted Toyota Land Cruiser cut them off.

The Innova drove alongside the Fortuner and a male passenger rolled down his window and began hurling invectives at the UP professor’s son. The man had reportedly yelled, “Hindi mo ba nakikita na escort kami? Convoy kami! Gago ka! P***** ina ninyo, Tumabi kayo!”

As such, the professor’s son, who was driving the Fortuner, was forced to pull over. It ‎was then that the bodyguard got off the Innova’s front passenger seat, drew his gun, then said, “Hindi mo ba alam na may binabantayan kaming convoy?”

After a few moments, the bodyguard returned to the Innova then sped off together with the Land Cruiser.

Later on, the Pangalangans checked with the Land Transportation Office (LTO) to find out more about the Innova, with license plate number ZEL 124. It was easily discovered that the vehicle was registered under the name of Mayor Meneses’ mother.

The report revealed that “Meneses’ mother had gone to the Inquirer office on Tuesday night, October 28, to talk to publisher Pangalangan.”

However, it seems that nothing came out of that visit. Mayor Meneses’ mother only reiterated that neither she nor her son were in the vehicles in question when the road rage encounter happened.

The report noted: “Atty. Pangalangan then filed a complaint in the National Bureau of Investigation on Wednesday, October 29, against Bulacan Mayor Patrick Meneses and his mother.”

Atty. Pangalangan explained that she filed the complaint because Meneses’ mother refused to identify the men in the two vehicles that she and her family encountered.

For the record, the mayor’s mother only gave the name of the Innova’s driver, Joel Piñon. She did not name the bodyguard who threatened the Pangalangans or the others who were also in the so-called convoy.
