Apparently, it’s not just for chalk.

“Chalk allowance” is the popular term for the amount given to teachers at the start of the school year for the purchase of chalk, pens, erasers, cartolinas and other school supplies that they use in teaching,” reports Ernie Reyes on InterAksyon.com.

The so-called “chalk allowance” is covered in Senate Bill 713 or “The Teaching Supplies Allowance Act of 2013.”

The report noted: “The Senate on Monday, November 24, approved amendments introduced by Senate President Pro-Tempore Ralph Recto increasing from the present PHP1,000 to PHP1,500 next year the so-called chalk allowance allotted for all public school teachers.”

Recto had initially advocated an annual “chalk allowance” amounting to PHP3,000.

Recto was quoted as saying, “Let’s just view it as a downpayment toward the ideal amount. I am sure there will be another increase next year.  Even if the increase is done by installments, it is better than no increase at all.”
