Chvrches on NAIA: ‘We’ve had worse!’

So electro synth-pop band Chvrches are now in Manila for their one-night-only show tonight. The band flew in from Singapore yesterday afternoon and went straight to work, meeting a select group of media for a press conference scheduled at 4pm.

“Sorry but looks like we’ll be delayed,” Nico Bacani of Vybe Productions apologizes to the group of journalists gathered at the lobby of Seda Hotel in BGC. “The band arrived on time. They’re here na, but they’re still at the airport. Parang there’s a problem with the baggage.”

So of course, we had to ask about their NAIA experience. We’re notorious for constantly figuring in many a worst airport of the world lists after all. “How did you know that?! ” a surprised Iaian Cook asks. “What’s going on?!”

“There was a lot of queuing getting off the airplane. Some guy, his baggage didn’t make it, so we didn’t get here until 4:50pm, so that’s why we had to push things a little bit,” Lauren Mayberry explains. Sensing our thought trajectory, the cute lead singer adds, “It wasn’t too bad. We’ve had worse.”

Martin Doherty affirms: “Yeah, it wasn’t so bad. We weren’t in there for that long.”

The band was in there for two hours, FYI. Impressive patience, yes?

“We’ve only been here three hours, two of which was spent at the airport, so we haven’t really seen anything of the city. It is very hot,” Lauren says when asked of their immediate impression, driving through the traffic and all. “I think tonight we’ll be going around, look for local food, have a few drinks.”

According to social media, the band ended up in Finders Keepers, along Pasong Tamo in Makati for those drinks. Not too shabby, we must say.

The much-awaited gig is on tonight and it looks like fan fave “Get Away” is on the agenda. Now, if you’ve been wondering, like we are, what the band’s pre-gig rituals are, you’d be disappointed. “That is a common questions we’re asked. We try and make [interesting] stories like ‘we wear black masks and sacrifice chickens,’ but actually, we only do vocal warm ups. Boring!” Says Cook.

We’re loving their humor already! Can’t wait for tonight!

Chvrches, 8pm, Samsung Hall, SM Aura, Taguig. Ticketworld. Tickets start at PHP4,087.28
