It’s an exhibition inspired by da Vinci and love.
“The Mona Lisa Project” is a long-term project of artist and gallerist Soler Santos. His wife’s name is Mona and so, as a romantic gesture, he began a collection of works from artist friends that integrate the image of Leonardo da Vinci’s famous icon.
Eventually, he started commissioning other artists of different styles and genres to create Mona Lisa portraits.
“The parameters Soler defined were open enough — limiting only the physical scale of the works — to allow each artist to engage with the subject from their respective aesthetic concerns. For some, the project started as an attempt to copy but eventually disputing that same act. For others, the aesthetic philosophy inherent to the Mona Lisa provided various avenues to explore and assess,” according to the gallery notes at last year’s Mona Lisa Project exhibit at CCP.
The result is an interesting mix of Mona Lisa portraits, most of them playful.
This year, the Mona Lisa Project is being shown at Solaire Resort & Casino’s new wing and features around 80 artists (until Jan 15).
Here are the ones that caught our eye — the topmost is by Romeo Lee.
