3 Metro Manila restaurants that let you choose your own food adventure

Starting next year, global fast food chain McDonald’s will roll out an estimated 2000 “Create Your Taste” kiosks across the States to allow customers to build their own burger. At these kiosks, people get to choose among an assortment of buns and toppings such as barbecue sauce, vegetables and cheese.

It’s the kind of gimmick and privilege that surely will lure the people in, much like the following restaurants in Metro Manila, who’re already allowing its diners to choose their own adventure. Ah, somebody’s ahead of the game, no?

Upon sitting, guests are supposed to fill out a form, indicating the kind of ramen they prefer: Butao King (PHP390), Black King (PHP410), Red King (PHP410), Green King (PHP410), and the Limited King (PHP410). After which, they can adjust the flavor by ticking the boxes according to their preferences, based on the noodles, the addition of vegetables, garlic and pork toppings, and the level of spiciness. It’s ramen, just the way you want it. Ramen Nagi, SM Aura Premier, C5 Road Corner 26th Street, BGC, Taguig; +63 2 8286793. Daily 10am-11pm. (Photo: SM City North EDSA Facebook account)

Perhaps, it’s the only time kids (and kids at heart!) are allowed to play with their food. When dining at Slappy Cakes, let your imagination run wild because you get to decide what to put in your pancakes, how to cook it, as well as how to present it. Customers are entitled to a number of choices, from the batter to the fillings and the toppings. For instance, you can start with vegan batter (PHP260), fill that with mangoes (PHP60), and then top it with peanut butter (PHP80). And it can take the shape of a heart. Cheesy! Yes, you can sprinkle grated cheese on it, too. Slappy Cakes, G/F New Eastwood Mall, E. Rodriguez Jr Ave, Quezon City; +63 2 9093501. Daily 7am-12am. (Photo: abs-cbn.com)

tuan tuan

3. Tuan Tuan Chinese Brasserie

At Tuan Tuan, you get to design your own noodle soup. Step one is to choose your soup base (starts PHP388). That alone can be taxing as there are ten to choose from, including Szechuan spicy halibut soup, Malay laksa, and Thai Tom Yum Goong. Then, an even harder task: choose from over 30 toppings at your disposal. After which, the type of noodles: vermicelli, hofun, minute noodles, etc. Finally, your side dish. With so many options, it takes more time deciding what to get than wolfing down the delicious bowl of noodle soup. Tuan Tuan Chinese Brasserie, 3/F Mega Fashion Hall, SM Megamall, Mandaluyong; +63 2 6327483, +63 9155008026.
