COCONUTS HOT SPOT — Since it opened on Dec 12, Churreria La Lola has been crazy-busy frying and serving different kinds of churros at the Power Plant Mall in Rockwell. It takes over the deli area of Zaifu Restaurant at the food court level, and believe us, that space has never seen so much action until now.

La Lola has been an idea hovering over the owners’ minds for some time now, claims Sergi Rostoll. “We’ve been thinking about it for years; since we came to the Philippines and saw that Filipinos love sweets.” But it remained just an idea, as the team became too preoccupied with the operations at Las Flores and Rambla. “Dani [Aliaga] came to us one day and said that Rockwell was offering us a place in the basement and so we said, okay let’s finally do it,” he adds. It was a quick decision, just as easy and quick as it was set up since the concept has been there all along.

La Lola keeps it pretty traditional when it comes to its food offerings. The churros, which is the shop’s prized offering, is a ridged log of choux pastry that’s been deep-fried in oil; in the case of La Lola, however, it’s olive oil. Think of it as a Spanish doughnut in stick form. Its version is golden and crisp, and though a tad greasy, remains delectable.

It also has intriguing variations of the classic — the Churroreo, which comes with vanilla ice cream and caramel; the Chocochurros, which is dipped in dark chocolate; and the Churros Bravos, which is savory and is served with aioli and salsa brava like the Patatas Bravas.

Of the lot, the easy standout is the Xuxos (pronounced chuchos), which is churros stuffed with either Nutella, dulce de leche, strawberry jam or peanut butter. It also has three savory sandwiches on offer and a bevy of beverages, including the horchata, which is a traditional summer Spanish drink. It is made with tigernuts or chufa, which the company brings in from Spain.

Sweet, satisfying and very portable (its fancy take out paper cones carries both the churros and choco dip), La Lola’s churros will certainly have people snacking anytime of day, giving other dessert shops in the area a run for their money.
