This story shows that even toy guns can get you killed.

“SPO1 Resty Castillo, 38, of the Navotas City Police, is currently under the custody of the Manila Police District (MPD) homicide section after he killed a suspected robber who brandished a toy gun while trying to grab his beltbag in front of a churh in Tondo, Manila,” reports Jenny Manongdo in Tempo.

Castillo voluntarily surrendered to Moriones (Tondo) Police Station. He has also surrendered his service firearm, a .9mm Beretta pistol, to authorities.

Castillo explained that “he never meant to kill the victim, Nestor Obsequias, 48, on the night of December 14 when the latter tried to grab his beltbag containing the day’s earnings in driving the family’s jeepney.”

Castillo had thought the robber’s gun was real. It was only later that he found out it was a toy.

In his testimony, Castillo said in Filipino: “(The suspect) appeared intoxicated as he tried to grab my belt bag forcibly. I asked him what his problem was but it was as if he did not hear me. He kept on grabbing my bag. He also punched me on the mouth and pulled out a gun and aimed it at me. I had no choice but to use my service firearm (a .9mm gun). I believe it was a blessing that no one was accidentally hit by the bullet because the incident happened in front of the church.”
