When singer JanJay Coquilla and professional athletes Lamont Waters and Anton del Rosario came across Cream in the US, they instantly knew it was a concept that could work in the Philippines. It didn’t require much thought: Cookies are the trendiest pastry of the moment, ice cream never goes out of style and people love customizing their food.
It’s a winning formula that sparked Phat Boys, the longtime friends’ food business. It employs the same idea — build-your-own ice cream sandwich — but with their own flair and flavor incorporated in it.
The brand is super new. It has only been to two bazaars but already it’s showing a lot of promise. Kids and adults alike were quick to take the bait and indulge on what they had to offer.
There are currently six home-baked cookies to choose from: chocolate chip, double chocolate chip, snickerdoodle, oatmeal, peanut butter and sugar cookie. You can mix and match or opt to just stick to one.
As for the ice cream, there’s vanilla, chocolate, strawberry, mint chocolate chip, avocado, ube and mocha.
Finally, the toppings. You can adorn your ice cream sandwich with your choice of toppings, including peanuts, Oreo crumbs, chocolate chip, M&Ms, candy sprinkles, Rice Krispies and crushed Graham cracker.
It will set you back PHP99 per sandwich, inclusive of two toppings, which is about the same price you’ll pay for an ice cream bar.
If you don’t feel like making tough decisions (we know, right?), they have a range of tried-and-tested “phat boys.” There’s the Peanut Butter Overload (peanut butter and double choco cookies + choco ice cream + choco chips and Oreo crumbs), the PB&J (oatmeal and peanut butter cookies + strawberry ice cream + peanuts), the Halo-halo (snickerdoodle and choco chip cookies + ube ice cream + sprinkles and peanuts), and the bestseller of the lot, the O.G. (choco chip and double choco chip cookies + vanilla ice cream + choco chips and peanuts).
Phat Boys has got everything covered. All we have to do really is to choose our own adventure.
