CBCP slams company selling ‘No race, no religion’ T-shirts as souvenirs for Pope’s visit

In his Facebook page, Lingayen Dagupan Archbishop Socrates Villegas, president of the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines (CBCP), warned the public against buying T-shirts with “misleading” statements attributed to Pope Francis.

Villegas does not name the company, but it won’t take you long to find out which company it is.  (Just read on.)

We’re reposting Villegas’ statement below:

A few hours after Villegas made his statement public, ABS-CBN spokesman Bong Osorio said, “ABS-CBN assures the public that there was no intent to deceive or mislead the public through the commemorative shirt that carry statements inspired by Pope Francis’ message of love, openness, and humility.”

Osorio added: “We apologize if a particular statement shirt offended anyone. We are pulling out the item from our online shop and all retail partner stores.”

The slogan is one of the designs used on the network’s commemorative shirts in celebration of the coming visit of Pope Francis. Other designs include “Ganito Ako. Ganyan Ka. Who Am I To Judge” and “Thank You sa Malasakit. Pope Francis sa Pilipinas.”
