Looks like the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) needs to weed out some of its people.

“Just recently, four MMDA traffic enforcers were arrested after a truck driver named George Basubas accused them of extorting money from him,” reports ABS-CBNnews.com.

According to Basubas, he had been driving along Commonwealth Avenue when he was supposedly nabbed for getting on the yellow lane by traffic constable Edelito Corilla.

Before Basubas knew it, Corilla was asking PHP300 from him. Corilla’s fellow traffic constables, Dominador Panopio, Gop Calis, and Carlito Llaneta, also joined in their negotiation.

As they negotiated, traffic built up in the area.

Dick Pelembergo, chief of the Quezon City government’s Anti-Crime Group, happened to be in the area when Basubas was accosted by Corilla and his companions.

Pelembergo said he decided to check on what was happening with Basubas’ truck. This was how he inadvertently found out that a “kotong encounter” was happening.

The report said that many motorists have already been complaining of the alleged extortion activities of MMDA traffic constables assigned in the Commonwealth Avenue area.

MMDA chair Francis Tolentino said they would conduct a more thorough investigation of the case involving the corrupt traffic constables.
