“I got there at 8am, I saw the usual photo: crowds, people taking naps and a bit of chaos,” says Coconuts contributor Tammy David. While seated on the pavement, near the entrance for invitees with white passes, she noticed that there were a lot of people wearing Pope-themed shirts. “Most of them were really funny, so I approached them to take their photos,” Tammy tells Coconuts Manila.
Using her ‘Instagram’ camera — a Sony point-and-shoot — she approached a woman whose t-shirt had a iron-on photo of her and Pope Francis and quickly uploaded on her Instagram account. “And then, I kept going and going until 11am. I only stopped because I felt like my skin was burning.”
“I felt like I was 14 again whenever I would watch rock concerts and I would make my own T-shirt or buy official merchandise,” Tammy said on the Wall Street Journal Blog, which picked up her P-shirt story as early as 11am. “I was still shooting the series, when I got a message from them,” the photographer, who is one of the three #EverydayPhilippines pioneer photographers, says.
“It reminded me of Silverchair concert in 1997, when I had no money and the only alternative to the official merch was buying a Top 40 shirt. I really think this affirms Pope Francis’ rock star status. Who else — kanino pang mukha makikita mo sa t-shirt, diba?”
