2 shops in Metro Manila selling hard-to-find imported snacks

Speculoos Cookie Butter is so 2013, but Trader Joe’s seems to not be done with it just yet. Perhaps, as an effort to milk the cow, the US grocery chain has contracted a company to make an exclusive Speculoos Cookie Butter Cheesecake for the store.

The 7.5-inch cheesecake is made with a Speculoos cookie crust, a layer of smooth and thick cheesecake on top of that, then a generous smothering of cookie butter to finish.

It hasn’t reached our shores yet, and I doubt that it will, but in case you want to replicate it, you can still find and purchase Speculoos Cookie Butter in these two shops, which have been good sources for interesting imported goods.

1. The Blue Kitchen
Its known to carry a very wide array of local specialties, including Camote Garlic Chips, Banana Strings (BBQ flavor), Adobo Cashew Nuts, Coconut Jam Candy and Four Flavored Pastillas. There are so many interesting finds that I usually end up spending time perusing its displays, like I typically would in bookstores and supermarkets.

Apart from the homegrown delicacies, The Blue Kitchen also carries a good mix of foreign snacks. There’s Girl Scout Cookies, Cheerios Cereal Peanut Butter, Pop Tarts, crazy flavors of Oreo (Berry Burst Ice Cream!) and Kit Kat (Rum Raisin!), and Mandy’s Candy. This shop is a treasure trove of hard-to-find food items. Practically anything you buy is a steal. The Blue Kitchen, with shops in Shangri-la Mall, Power Plant Mall, and Robinsons Magnolia; +63 2 6341335, +63 2 8980931

2. Milky Way Deli
For those who frequent Cirkulo, Azuthai, Milky Way and Tsukiji restaurants, the Milky Way Deli acts as that shop that you end up going to even if it wasn’t your intention to. It’s such a tease, effortlessly drawing you to it, and by the time you snap out of the trance, you find yourself carrying a bag of all sorts of goods: Adobong Mani, Special Sampaloc, Turrones de Casuy, Barquillos and Chicharon. Sharing shelf space are food items from abroad that are hard to come by, like M&M’s Birthday Cake variant, Nutter Butter, 100 cal Oreo Thin Crisps, Welch’s PB&J Bite Size Snacks and Pods. Milky Way Deli, Milky Way Bldg. 900 Antonio Arnaiz Ave. (formerly Pasay Road) cor Paseo De Roxas, Makati; +63 2 8434124, +63 2 8437124
