It’s a flood of bills all saying the same thing.
“No less than five resolutions expressing the House of Representatives’ ‘collective and heartfelt gratitude’ to Pope Francis has been filed by various members of Congress,” reports Ben R. Rosario in Tempo.
The report noted: “House leaders were expecting more similar congratulatory messages to be filed but the first five measures
will have to be acted upon immediately.”
The report enumerated the five bills focusing on thanking Pope Francis:
1. House Resolution 1816 — This was filed by House Speaker Sonny Belmonte, House Majority Leader Neptali Gonzales II, and other senior leaders of the chamber. The bill stresses that the Pope “provided inspiration and encouragement to millions of Filipinos to make Jesus Christ the center of their lives.”
2. House Resolution 1806 — This was by Rep. Winson Castelo along with Roy Seneres (OFW Family Club); Salvio Fortuno (LP, Camarines Sur); Emil Ong (NUP, Northern Samar), and Elmer Panotes (NP, Camarines Norte).
3. House Rresolution 1799 — This was authored by Reps. Ferdinand Martin Romualdez, Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, Lani-Mercado-Revilla, Dato Arroyo, Jose L. Atienza, Jonathan dela Cruz, Victor Ortega, Philip Pichay, Aleta Suarez, and Toby Tiangco.
4. Hourse Resolution 1802 — This was authored by Rep. Eric L. Olivarez.
5. House Resolution 1813 — This was filed separately by House Deputy Speaker Sergio Apostol.
For his part, as the report indicated, “Castelo explained that the resolutions were filed rather belatedly because of the declaration of holidays during the days Pope Francis was in the country.”
