Hot logs are bad news.

“The seizure of PHP8 million worth of suspected illegally cut logs was done over the weekend at the high-end El Nido Adventure Resort located Barangay Corong-Corong in El Nido, Palawan,” reports Ruth T. Rodriguez on InterAksyon.com.

The move was done by environment authorities from the Palawan Council for Sustainable Development Staff (PCSDS), the local Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), and the town’s Community Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO).

The resort — which is allegedly owned by Norwegian national Jan Nielsen and Michelle Gasacao, who is the identified caretaker — is still under construction. The report added that “when asked about the logs, Nielsen and Gasacao allegedly refused to say anything and said they will only speak in court.”

Nielsen and Gasacao have been charged for the violation of Section 68 of Presidential Decree 705, or the Forestry Code of the Philippines.

The report also noted: “The seized logs were 318 Ipil, and 367 assorted of Amugis and Kayataw trees – all are banned from being cut down in Palawan forests.”
