Where’s the mercy and compassion?

“Malacañang reiterated President Benigno Aquino III was only stating the truth when he criticized the clergy in front of Pope Francis,” reports ABS-CBNnews.com.

In a radio interview, Communications Secretary Herminio Coloma Jr. said the Palace respects the position of Fr. Amado Picardal, who blasted Aquino for bearing “false witness against the Church in front of Pope Francis, the whole nation and the whole world.”

Coloma said in Filipino, “The President was just stating the truth in his speech.”

The report noted: “In his hotly debated speech, Aquino lauded the role of the Church during the martial law years. He later shifted to criticize its members for becoming silent in the face of allegations during the administration of President Gloria Arroyo.”

Aquino had said, “In contrast to their previous silence, some members of the clergy now seem to think that the way to be true to the faith means finding something to criticize, even to the extent that one prelate admonished me to do something about my hair, as if it were a mortal sin.”

In a piece that appeared on CBCP News, Picardal said that Aquino “was not only rude, he was also a liar.”

Picardal explained: “The Church was not silent during the dark days of Martial law, the Church was not silent during the Arroyo administration, and the Church is not silent under Aquino’s administration. It is not his hair — or lack of it — that has to be admonished. It is what is lacking below his hair.”
