This story is bound to scare off some tourists…but it has to be told.

“Four Koreans — Cho Hyun Seok, 35; Kan Dae Jin, 33; Kim Kyung-Ju, 45 and Kim Thin Sung, 33 — who were kidnapped in Metro Manila last week were rescued by the police Tuesday night, January 27, in Barangay Amacalan in Gerona, Tarlac,” reports Mar T. Supnad in Tempo.

The Koreans were still in handcuffs when they were found along the national highway. The report disclosed that “the victims said they are sure that their abductors are Filipinos but they refused to confirm if they or their families paid ransom to the kidnappers.”

According to Supt. Ariel Rebancos Red, the Koreans were abducted by heavily armed men somewhere in San Juan City late Friday afternoon, Jan 23.

The report noted: “The Koreans said their abductors divested them of all their belongings including laptops, cellphones, iPods, wrist watches, wallets, among others, before fleeing aboard the Innova van owned by one of the victims.”

Red theorized that “the kidnappers may have been informed of the nightly police checkpoint along the MacArthur Highway, less than two kilometers from where the victims.” He said that this may be why the Koreans were suddenly abandoned by their abductors.

The report revealed that “the kidnappers along with the victims were traveling towards north from Metro Manila on board the white Innova van owned by Cho Hyun Seok when the abductors suddenly fled before reaching the police checkpoint.”
