If you blinked, then you might have missed the brouhaha surrounding Makati Mayor Junjun Binay’s arrest.

“Binay arrived at the Senate on Thursday morning, January 29, accompanied by officers of the Senate sergeant-at-arms who arrested him in compliance with the order of the Senate due to his continued refusal to attend the hearings on the alleged overpriced Makati City Hall Building II,” reports Amita Legaspi on GMA News Online.

An ANC report reveals that “the Makati mayor arrived a few minutes after the Senate Blue Ribbon subcommittee started its hearing. The session was temporariliy suspended as Binay’s supporters grew restive. The session resumed once order was restored.”

Upon the resumption of the session, Binay declared to Sen. Koko Pimentel: “I would like to respectfully manifest that I will no longer participate in the ongoing proceedings. I was advised by my lawyers not to attend the hearing. As advised by my lawyers, there’s no reason for me to participate.”

Binay also pointed out that it was not within the Senate’s jurisdiction to do the probe on the alleged verpriced Makati City Hall Building II. At this, Pimentel noted Binay’s manifestation. He said, “(Mayor Binay) is free to go. I’ll understand if he doesn’t want to testify due to pending cases.”

By “pending cases,” Pimentel is referring to the ones already filed before the Ombudsman.
