Rhetorical question: How come the Abu Sayyaf are still around?

“One person was killed while four others — two civilians and two soldiers — were injured in separate attacks attributed to the Abu Sayyaf Group in Sulu and Basilan on Friday, January 30,” reports Julie Alipala in Philippine Daily Inquirer.

According to Ensign Chester Ian Ramos, spokesperson of the Naval Forces in Western Mindanao, the first incident happened in Sumisip, Basilan at around 9:45am.

Ramos explained that “Abu Sayyaf bandits fired on a squad of militiamen patrolling near a bridge construction project in Barangay Limboo Candis.” The encounter left one civilian dead and two others injured.

Ramos did not give more details about the civilian casualties.

Ramos then went on to disclose that in Sulu, two soldiers were injured when Abu Sayyaf bandits ambushed a convoy of belonging to the 35th Infantry Battalion around 1:30pm.

The report noted: “The soldiers were from Barangay Danag in Patikul town and were on their way to Jolo when fired at as they were traversing Barangay Bungkaong, still in Patikul.”
