“The city government of Manila has passed a resolution honoring and extending financial assistance to the bereaved familes of the fallen Philippine National Police (PNP) Special Action Force (SAF) commandos, as well as the 14 troopers injured, in Sunday’s clash with Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) rebels in Mamasapano, Maguindanao,” reports Ina Reformina on ABS-CBNnews.com.
The PNP-SAF troopers had been out to capture Malaysian terrorist Zulkifli bin Hir alias “Marwan” and Filipino bomb maker Abdulbasit Usman.
The resolution indicated: “The brutality of the attack and the high death toll caught the attention of the Filipino people and shocked the whole nation. The death and wounding of the police officers did not only affect the people of Mindanao, but also caused great concern to the people of Manila.”
The report noted: “The City Council of Manila enacted the resolution in support of the call of former President and Manila Mayor Joseph ‘Erap’ Estrada for the city to do its part in honoring the courageous fallen.” As such, the PHP5.1 million financial aid will be taken from Estrada’s discretionary fund.
The families of each of the 44 fallen SAF commandos will receive PHP100,000, while the injured troopers will receive PHP50,000.
