The bus didn’t live up to its name.
“Just before 3pm on Sunday, March 1, 14-year-old Abby Cunanan and her friend, Rainier Castro, were crossing the road at the intersection of EDSA and East Avenue in Quezon City when a Safeway bus (TXP-845) hit the former,” reports Rey Galupo in The Philippine Star.
The report noted: “The bus dragged Cunanan several meters and her head was crushed under the vehicle’s left front tire.”
For his part, Castro told the police, “We just alighted from the Metro Rail Transit and were trying to cross towards East Avenue to go to the Quezon Memorial Circle, where we were supposed to hold a dance practice. It just happened so fast.”
The report added that Castro “admitted that they did not notice that the traffic light was about to change and Cunanan hesitated in the middle of the road.”
The bus driver, Lory Gallerda, claimed that he didn’t notice Cunanan and Castro crossing the road. He said he “only realized that there was an accident when he heard a thud.”
Gallerda will be charged with reckless imprudence resulting in homicide.
