Can Intramuros regain its Old World beauty?

“The Intramuros Administration (IA) has begun work to restore the historic district to its former glory. But the agency will need more financial support from government,” reports ANC.

IA consultant Elroy Rendor revealed that the initial budget earmarked for the Intramuros rehab was PHP600 million. However, he says he hopes that this will be increased.

While the budget is being sorted out further, the IA has made moves to make the area more pedestrian-friendly.

As such, it notified the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA), Manila Traffic Parking Bureau (MTPB), and Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) about the new traffic scheme, which started on Mar 2.

A GMA News Online report also outlined the new traffic scheme’s features:

—One-way on General Luna, southbound from Andres Soriano Avenue to Muralla Street. Vehicles from northbound-P.Burgos Avenue can turn right to Muralla Street
—One-way on Arzobispo Street, northbound only from Anda to Postigo
—Vehicles along Andres Soriano Avenue coming from Anda Circle can no longer proceed via Muralla Street but can turn left to Soriano Extension then right to Magallanes Drive
—Vehicles can no longer pass by the portion of Sto. Tomas Street in front of Manila Cathedral
—Vehicles can no longer pass by the portion of Sto. Tomas Street in front of Plaza Sto. Tomas along Solana and Cabildo Streets.
Bollard will be installed across Muralla Street beside the Bank of the Philippine Islands
—No parking around Plaza Roma, along Andres Soriano Avenue, Cabildo and General Luna Streets and Muralla Street on the side of Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila
—Vehicular traffic will be limited to two lanes along Andres Soriano Avenue
