“The Manila city government wants at least a section of the building to be used by students,” reports Erika Sauler on Inquirer.net.

Come June, the City Hall will launch its ‘Institute of Performing Arts’ under the Universidad de Manila’s College of Physical Education and Sports. Courses in dance, theater and music will be offered, and thus the need for performance space.

According to the report, under an agreement between the NCCA and the GSIS signed in 2004, the city government has the usufrutuary rights to use the Met.

The local government has offered PHP267 million to buy back the theater, and while it is still negotiating with GSIS, it will already start its cleanup as directed by the agreement.

“The upcoming cleanup will be done at the side of the theater facing Antonio Villegas Street, a wing formerly occupied by a GSIS office but will now be reserved for UDM use,” the report notes.

Wolfgang was the last to perform at the Met four years ago.
