Where did it come from?
“At around 2 a.m. on Saturday, March 7, Florian Catipon heard a scratching noise coming from the roof of his house in Barangay 84 Zone 10 in Pasay City,” reports GMA News Online.
Catipon initially thought a robber was trying to get inside their home. Much to his surprise, it was a pangolin or an anteater.
Catipon and his neighbors eventually captured the anteater. They then called the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR).
The report said that in the Philippines, anteaters are known to be inhabitants of Palawan. In fact, the DENR considers it an endangered species.
Anteaters are traded in the black market because their meat and reproductive organs are believed to have healing properties.
Under the country’s Wildlife Act, it is illegal to sell or keep anteaters. Those who violate the law may pay a fine of PHP500,000 and be in prison for six years.
The anteater found in Pasay is now under the care of the DENR.
