Hall-of-Fame trainer Freddie Roach hopes Manny Pacquiao will take matters into his own hands and not rely on God when he faces off against American champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. on May 2 in Las Vegas.

In a recent interview with New York Magazine, Roach expressed some concern about Pacquiao’s faith and how it may affect the mega-fight, which is expected to be the richest in the history of the sport.

“He tells me, ‘Let’s just fight and let God decide who wins’,” Roach said of Pacquiao.

“I said, ‘Manny, God doesn’t give a (expletive) who wins. He’s got bigger things to do,'” he added.

Pacquiao is already the underdog in the fight according to the Las Vegas oddsmakers, and many boxers and coaches are also favoring Mayweather’s defensive skill to prevail over the Filipino’s whirlwind offense.

Roach told NY Mag that Pacquiao “has to fight the best fight of his life to win” against Mayweather, who is entering the bout with a 47-0 record.

“That won’t be easy,” Roach conceded. “I want to get (Pacquiao) meaner and more aggressive, because he’s going to need it in this fight.”

Pacquiao is currently training in Roach’s Wild Card Gym in Los Angeles, while Mayweather has been training at his own gym in Las Vegas.
