MANILA, Philippines — Purefoods Star coach Tim Cone expects his team to have a tough series against Alaska in the PBA Commissioner’s Cup playoffs.

Cone said that they may be among the top three teams after the elimination round, but the Aces, whom he used to coach, will be hard to beat.

“Alaska it is, and we probably could not have picked a tougher opponent,” said the Hotshots coach said in the PBA website.

He said it would be important for the Hotshots to take the opening game in the best-of-three quarterfinals.

“At this time of the conference, every team is tough. We’ve worked hard the whole week, so we’re a confident group. In a short series, anything can happen. We’re hoping we can get that first game.”

Alaska made it to the playoffs through a spirited game against Barangay Ginebra. But Aces coach Alex Compton said they have no time to celebrate.

“Our time of being happy about making the playoffs is over. We have to play Purefoods, the best team in the league at winning in these situations,” he said.

“Everyone on that team knows how to win and Denzel [Bowles] is playing great. I’m sure we will learn some lessons from them in this short series, but hopefully we can find ways to steal some possessions from them,” Compton added.

Game time will be at 7 p.m. at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
