El Hogar demolition: Not today

Got a tip? Send it to us at manila@coconuts.co.

It’s not true that El Hogar is being demolished.

All through last night until early today, we heard rumors that the famous Beaux Art building on Juan Luna corner Muella della Industria Streets in Binondo was being torn down. We quickly went to the site and learned it isn’t so.

In fact, a nice surprise greeted us there. Look: there aren’t any more fences surrounding the heritage building. And there’s no longer a demolition notice. According to our sources, the new owners only put the fences to keep people out.

In November 2014, we reported that blue GI sheets were erected onto the concrete barriers effectively shielding the entire ground floor of the building from the public’s eye, and sending conservationists into panic.

All is well, at least for now. You can expect Coconuts Manila to keep a tight watch on this one. In the mean time, more photos of El Hogar from today:
