David Foster on 10-year old Pinay: She sang out of tune

The semifinals of Asia’s Got Talent started last night, April 15, 2015, and two representatives form the Philippines performed: The Velasco Brothers and Gwyneth Dorado.

Gwyneth, a 10-year old singer, sang Jessie J’s “Nobody’s Perfect” with a full band (she herself played the guitar at some points).

Some judges liked it. Vanness Wu, for example, complimented, “I loved it. I thought you were amazing. You’re so fierce. I thought you came out with a lot of enrgy. Mahal kita all over again!”

Melanie C also had good words for the show’s youngest contestant: “I’m a big, big fan of yours and I know you’re a big, big star in the future. I love Jessie J. I bet you love Jessie J, and I guess she would have loved that, too. you are fearless, and that’s what you have to be as a performer – fearless – so you keep going.”

However, the other judges were not that impressed.

Anggun said that the full band setup underlined her talent while David Foster noted that she sang out of tune “and it kind of bothered me a little bit. Maybe you were nervous, maybe you couldn’t hear properly. You jumping from a little piece of guitar to a band is not exactly what I would have hoped for from you, at this point in your career. having said that, we’re going to hear a lot more from you for sure.”

Boo! Oh well. We still have other semifinalists: shadow play performers El Gamma Penumbra, singer Gerphil Geraldine Flores, and dance group Junior New System.
