Mary Jane Veloso’s mother, Celia, had strong words to say about the government, that’s for sure. Appearing in a press conference following the Veloso family’s return from Indonesia on Saturday, Celia aired her grievances toward the government for taking credit on the 11th hour reprieve granted to her daughter Mary Jane.
“Ngayong nandito na kami sa Pilpinas, marami kaming sisingilin mula sa gubyerno,” Celia begins. She denies the claims of the government that it helped saved her daughter. “Sabi nila, sa kanila nanggaling kung bakit hindi natuloy yung bitay ng anak ko. Hindi po totoo yun.”
“The older Veloso also hit the Department of Foreign Affairs for their inaction and for hiding them from the media while they were in Indonesia,” notes Inquirer.net.
This naturally did not sit well with the Filipinos, who religiously stayed, supported and followed the dramatic turn of events.
On the comments section of a GMA news Facebook post, netizens aired their disappointment over what Celia Veloso said.
“Naglahong parang bula ang simpatya ko sa pamilyang ito,” reads one comment.
“Ituloy ang bitay! Isama pati nanay,” reads another.
“Naisalba na yung anak mo, ganyan pa ugali mo. Imbis na magpasalamat, ganyan pa. Baka sa huli magsisi ka,” another one points out.
“Di na lang kayo maging thankful. Wala namang magagawa ang pag rally niyo kung hindi kinausap ni Pnoy si Widodo.”
PNoy, as we all know by now, negotiated with Indonesia’s President Widodo, and then made a last-minute phone call when Mary Jane’s recruiter Maria Kristina Sergio surrendered to the police. It was this call that convinced the Indonesian government to delay Mary Jane’s execution at the last minute.
For a change, the President responded beautifully to Celia Veloso’s claims: “We did what we could. We were not involved in the creation of the problem.”
“President Aquino refused to comment on the statements of the Veloso’s mother, saying he wanted to know the context of her remarks,” says a GMA report.
“What more can the government do? From the counsel that was provided, from the intercessions done through with President Widodo, with the foreign ministers, with the Attorney General, bringing the entire family there, too,” says President Aquino.
It looks like this time around, the Filipinos have President Aquino’s back.
